Hi Jason
- [20:03:38] <Vamsi>
thanks a lot for reviewing "Rajinikanth" app and sending me the recommendations .. we are trying to increase the social aspect of it now .. :) as per your recommendations :D
- [20:04:09] <Vamsi>
jasonacooper do you have gtalk id ?

oops i was adding u on api.jason@google.com
- [20:06:34] <Aakash>
hey Jason :)
- [20:06:41] <jasonacooper>
Hi Aakash.
- [20:08:48] <Aakash>
any info on my app review ? xml is at http://j8.bitrhymes.com/tagme/tagme.xml
- [20:10:14] <jasonacooper>
It should be complete today.
- [20:11:41] <Aakash>
ok thanks!
- [20:12:30] <Aakash>
an activity on app install is OK? because i don't think Orkut does it automatically.
- [20:13:01] <Aakash>
the method has been discussed over here- http://groups.google.com/group/opensocial-orkut/browse_thread/thread/3f476388eb905830/da23fdf663a30037
- [20:13:46] <jasonacooper>
No, the guidelines prohibit updates on install.
- [20:14:05] <jasonacooper>
Never post an update just because the user views an application. If they are viewing the app for the first time (i.e. they just installed the app) the app should not post an update because installing an app represents an orkut action, not an action within the application. Only post updates when a user does something meaningful within your application (e.g. changes status or beats a high score).
- [20:14:12] <jasonacooper>
(from the guidelines)
- [20:14:30] <Aakash>
oh ok,
- [20:15:26] <Vamsi>
jason im getting viewer not null when we see the canvas as a viewer mode
- [20:15:46] <Vamsi>
but its fine when i see the same as owner
- [20:16:20] <Vamsi>
why is that so ?

oops
- [20:17:35] <jasonacooper>
By viewer, you mean viewer without the app?
- [20:17:55] <Aakash>
the opensocial.Person.Field.STATUS returns the personal->headline field from profile, shouldn't it return the status message of user?
- [20:18:25] <Vamsi>
viewer is not owner
- [20:19:20] <jasonacooper>
Aakash: I did a test awhile back and it did return the status. Perhaps it's changed since then. I'll do another test soon.

can u look this http://opensocial.musicmazaa.com/fanclubs/rajini/js/application.js
- [20:20:19] <jasonacooper>
Vamsi: viewer should not be null but you should handle this just in case.
- [20:22:02] <Vamsi>
when viewer is posting updates on an app where wud that updates go ??
- [20:22:52] <jasonacooper>
Vamsi: I'm not sure I understand. By updates, are you referring to activities or app data?
- [20:23:34] <jasonacooper>
Have you tried opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.VIEWER instead of 'VIEWER'? This shouldn't change anything, but it is more correct.

Yeah, I was just looking at it.
- [20:24:22] <Vamsi>
i have a getInfo function where it requests all the user data
- [20:24:54] <jasonacooper>
Right. I was just noting that you used the string 'VIEWER' to indicate the viewer instead of the OS object.
- [20:25:07] <jasonacooper>
The latter being more correct.
- [20:25:26] <Vamsi>
got it
- [20:26:06] <Aakash>
just tested this code on DAfOS http://mibbit.com/pb/dnS7JU returns headline
- [20:27:20] <jasonacooper>
Aakash: Can you file a new issue? I'll follow up with the team to see if this is the correct behavior. I know I've used it to return status in the past.
- [20:27:38] <Aakash>
ok
- [20:38:02] <Vamsi>
thank u jason the viewer issue has been fixed :)
- [20:38:24] <jasonacooper>
Great Vamsi. How?
- [20:39:06] <Vamsi>
B.add(B.newFetchPersonRequest('VIEWER'), 'viewer'); repalce with B.add(B.newFetchPersonRequest(opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.VIEWER), 'viewer');
- [20:39:28] <Vamsi>
now we need to add just one more social feature
- [20:40:08] <Vamsi>
we cant really add comments / discussion here coz ... that wud ignite a battle between fans and anti-fans .. resulting in a lot of misuse
- [20:40:45] <jasonacooper>
Interesting. This is the first I've seen of 'VIEWER' not working. I need to make a point to update all of the docs that use this syntax.

my other apps are ok with VIEWER but lately im facing this .. does this mean that my sandbox specs are upgraded to 0.8
- [20:47:04] <jasonacooper>
No. Even when 0.8 support is available in the sandbox, you will have to use <Require feature="opensocial-0.8"/>. Since you're still using 0.7, this isn't related to 0.8.
- [20:48:07] <jasonacooper>
Regarding social features, social apps should let people socialize, to form a community. The comments box was just one suggestion of how to do this but there are many more.

I'm having an issue on hi5? anyone here good with hi5?:)
- [21:05:49] <besquared>
oops.. that first one shouldn't be a ? hehe
- [21:06:38] <Aakash>
what issues you got on hi5?
- [21:06:59] <besquared>
yeah.. so.. on myspace I'm used to getting the data response for VIEWER and doing response.get('VIEWER')
- [21:07:03] <besquared>
but it keeps telling me that it has no properties
- [21:07:17] <besquared>
it looks like I'm getting back a normal response
- [21:07:19] <besquared>
hasError is false
- [21:07:27] <Vamsi>
hi5 got a separate channel i think besquared
- [21:07:32] <besquared>
they did
- [21:07:33] <besquared>
but it's dead
- [21:07:34] <Aakash>
i think hi5 guys have same irc hours as opensocial, #hi5dev is best place
- [21:07:34] <besquared>
:)
- [21:07:41] <besquared>
they lied
- [21:07:41] <Vamsi>
besquared
- [21:08:02] <Vamsi>
opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.VIEWER
- [21:08:06] <besquared>
anyways.. I'm not sure because I've been developing for myspaces ghetto version of OS for a while now
- [21:08:24] <Vamsi>
use that instead of viewer i just had this issue and it solved it
- [21:08:25] <besquared>
I'm not sure exactly what the method to access the response items is.. like.. what keys are available to me if I do a request for VIEWER
- [21:08:45] <besquared>
same with VIEWER_FRIENDS?
- [21:08:52] <besquared>
so what is response.get() for? heh
- [21:10:09] <besquared>
it looks like that only returns the string "VIEWER"..:)
- [21:10:43] <Vamsi>
http://opensocial.musicmazaa.com/fanclubs/rajini/js/application.js
- [21:10:47] <Vamsi>
check that for referrence
- [21:11:01] <Vamsi>
getInfo and saveInfo function save almost all the require data
- [21:14:40] <jasonacooper>
besquared: request the viewer using something like req.add(req.newFetchPersonRequest(opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.VIEWER), 'viewer');
- [21:14:48] <besquared>
hrmm
- [21:14:56] <jasonacooper>
Then retrieve this in the response using req.get('viewer').getData()
- [21:15:13] <jasonacooper>
req represents two separate objects above. Sorry about that.
- [21:15:44] <besquared>
it's fine
- [21:17:02] <jasonacooper>
Yeah, hi5 supposedly has office hours now but I've heard it's not too dependable. I'd like to try to encourage them to be in this channel more often.
- [21:17:04] <besquared>
where do the request options go
- [21:17:46] <jasonacooper>
if you have request options, your request looks like req.add(req.newFetchPersonRequest(opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.VIEWER, params), 'viewer');
- [21:17:54] <jasonacooper>
Notice the extra params object passed in.
- [21:18:04] <besquared>
do I need to name all of my requests like this?
- [21:18:10] <besquared>
kind of annoying.:)
- [21:18:26] <besquared>
makes some sense though so.. heh
- [21:18:58] <jasonacooper>
What do you mean by 'name'? Of course, variables can be named anything you'd like but the wordy constants can't be changed I'm afraid, unless you alias them yourself.
- [21:19:06] <jasonacooper>
OpenSocial tends to be a pretty wordy API.
- [21:21:03] <besquared>
no the constants are fine
- [21:21:22] <besquared>
I'm not used to having to name calls to viewer 'viewer'.. in myspace it defaults to the last name of the constant
- [21:21:25] <besquared>
ie: VIEWER
- [21:21:25] <besquared>
heh
- [21:21:53] <besquared>
so if I request "VIEWER" I can get the response using response.get("VIEWER")
- [21:21:58] <besquared>
makes my life a little easier..:)
- [21:22:08] <jasonacooper>
Hmm, that's interesting. You can give it any key you'd like. I usually use 'viewer' myself.
- [21:22:24] <besquared>
I know you can.. but it seems odd to not have a reasonable default
- [21:22:32] <besquared>
but it's fine
- [21:22:35] <besquared>
I can deal with it..:)
- [21:24:07] <besquared>
alright that worked
- [21:24:50] <besquared>

- [21:28:14] <besquared>

- [21:28:52] <besquared>
oh right.. myspace lets you add in params by adding appParams={some json here...} to the URL
- [21:29:45] <besquared>
lets you link directly to pages/features on your canvas page from outside
- [21:30:19] <besquared>

I've seen this done in orkut as well. To get the parameter, I believe you have to parse the URL, which thankfully isn't very hard if you're familiar with RegEx.
- [21:32:38] <besquared>
oh it's called view-params in hi5
- [21:32:48] <besquared>
that's super lame.. heh
- [21:34:54] <jasonacooper>
Is this the first time you're developing on hi5's platform?
- [21:35:59] <besquared>
yeah
- [21:36:31] <besquared>
All I'm trying to do if find the points of compatibility so I can write some integration points into our OpenSocial platform wrapper
- [21:36:42] <besquared>
lots of points in that sentenc
- [21:36:45] <Vamsi>
jason how long wud u be available now ??
- [21:38:53] <jasonacooper>
besquared: Unfortunately, MySpace is fairly different from a lot of other containers. hi5 and orkut are more similar.
- [21:39:07] <besquared>
they're not too different
- [21:39:07] <besquared>
heh
- [21:39:08] <jasonacooper>
Vamsi: I'm available for another 20-30 minutes.
- [21:39:45] <jasonacooper>
besquared: Well, that's the point. :) OpenSocial is all about learn once, write anywhere.
- [21:39:59] <besquared>
well that philosophy has never worked anywhere ever
- [21:39:59] <besquared>
hehe
- [21:40:13] <besquared>
it's more like.. learn once.. write integration code everywhere
- [21:41:32] <besquared>
hrmm.. doesn't support oauth?
- [21:41:36] <Vamsi>
besquared i nvr experienced that way
- [21:41:49] <Vamsi>
i code for orkut and hi5 simultaneously
- [21:42:04] <besquared>
you have to code to the lowest common denominator
- [21:42:12] <Vamsi>
problems i faced were more related to the stability of the sandboxes
- [21:42:20] <besquared>
all development teams have different implementation speeds even if everything else is perfect
- [21:42:44] <besquared>
of you have lots of if( I"m in this container ) { do this }
- [21:44:24] <Vamsi>
i rather do that on server side
- [21:44:37] <Vamsi>
majority of them
- [21:48:02] <Vamsi>
jason im almost done with send to friend :|
- [21:48:21] <jasonacooper>
Great. :)
- [21:49:19] <besquared>
anyways.. it's harder to monetize on orkut and hi5 right now.. which is why it's sort of further back on the list of priorities for app developers.. heh
- [21:49:45] <besquared>
it's good that they're doing all the opensocial work though
- [21:49:49] <besquared>
it'll help out in the long run I think
- [21:50:03] <besquared>
although I still don't see any of them writing core features on their own platforms like facebook does
- [21:54:40] <jasonacooper>
besquared: We're working on it. :)
- [21:55:19] <besquared>
heh.. the whole javascript making ajax requests is just a horrible way to implement a platform in my opinion
- [21:55:35] <besquared>
but whatev.. there's users there so
- [21:55:45] <besquared>
:)
- [21:59:24] <jasonacooper>
The REST API will be available soon so that will hopefully be a non-issue going forward. I personally don't think the JavaScript API is terrible, but a lot of developers are more comfortable with server-side development so it's good that it's finally coming.
- [21:59:44] <besquared>
the problem with REST APIs is that they drive response times really high
- [22:00:11] <besquared>
doing basic things like name/image displaying should be done by the container
- [22:00:16] <besquared>
at the proxy layer
- [22:00:18] <besquared>
heh
- [22:01:40] * api_dwh (n=api_dwh@72.14.224.1) Quit ("Leaving")
- [22:01:41] <besquared>
the problem with javascript isn't that it's horrible.. it's that it's just far too complicated for exposing the simple set of features that most applications require

"OWNER_FRIENDS"
- [22:01:59] <Vamsi>
jasonacooper: whats the alternative for that

- [22:02:36] <Vamsi>

- [22:03:00] <jasonacooper>
